Karu Singh

Arwal, Bihar

May 02, 2024 to May 02, 2026

Karu Singh's journey towards liberating his country was marked by fierce struggle. Born in 1913 in Majhiyawa village within Kurtha block, which now is in the Arwal district. His father, Shivdani Singh, worked as a farmer, and their livelihood depended on agriculture.

Karu Singh received his early education in the village school before moving on to a middle school in Kurtha. It was during his time in middle school that he became actively involved in the freedom movement. Attending meetings of the Congress and Kisan Sabha, he became increasingly passionate about challenging British rule and the oppression of landlords.

Under the guidance of renowned farmer leader PanditYadunandan Sharma, Karu Singh initiated a movement through the Kisan Sabha against the British regime and landlord oppression. His commitment to the cause led to his imprisonment during the Civil Disobedience Movement of 1931. Even upon his release, he continued to participate in protests, including Mahatma Gandhi's personal Satyagraha.

In 1942, during the Quit India Movement, Karu Singh and his comrades launched an attack on the Kurtha police station. The events of August 16th saw chaos engulf Kurtha as the police station was raided, resulting in the burning of records and the hoisting of the tricolor atop its roof amidst police firing. Despite the risks, Karu Singh remained dedicated to the cause, continuing his involvement in the freedom movement while living underground.

Karu Singh passed away on 28 December 1986.
