Satyadev Sharma

Arwal, Bihar

May 02, 2024 to May 02, 2026

Satyadev Sharma emerged as a pivotal figure in the freedom struggle within the Kurtha region. Born on 16 July 1920, in Majhiyawa village, now situated in the Arwal district, his father, Benny Sharma, worked as a farmer. Satyadev received his early education in the village and later enrolled in Kurtha Middle School. It was during his schooling years that he was introduced to the fervent movement for independence.

Majhiyawa, his village, stood as a significant hub of the freedom movement and Satyadev actively participated. His dedication to the cause led to his imprisonment. Upon his release, he immersed himself in the farmers' struggle against British rule, becoming a member of the All India Kisan Sabha. However, his activism led to another arrest and he was incarcerated in Gaya jail on 22 April 1941, serving a six-month term.

Following his release, he played a crucial role in the Quit India Movement, notably participating in the attack on Kurtha police station on August 16, 1942, after which he went into hiding, continuing to fuel the flames of the freedom movement. In recognition of his contributions, Prime Minister Indira Gandhi conferred upon him a Tamra Patra in 1972.

Satyadev Sharma passed away on 20 January 1988.

Tamra Patra was awarded by the Government of India in 1972.
